To Whom Shall We Go?

Updated: Dec 12, 2021

The Gospel of John 4 and 6

The disciples looked around at each other not knowing what to say.

They had just heard a hard doctrine that was not common thinking in their day.

The principle of the sacrament had just been taught -

one the Israelites should have connected to the law of sacrifice.

They were getting used to hearing different parables from the Master,

but many times they struggled to fully understand the concepts that really mattered.

The Savior would expound many things to them to help them see clearly,

but they could not see the full picture of his vision for humanity.

On this day, many would cease to follow, their faith severely challenged-

this was a difficult doctrine and many would be sore offended.

The bread and water that God gives us to sustain life temporally,

does not prevent us from a mortal death which happens to all inexorably.

But there is bread that nourishes and water we may partake of and never thirst.

In a spiritual sense, they would be symbols that would foster reverence and rebirth.

The bread and water that sustains the soul eternally

is a gift from God of his Son whose sacrifice can cleanse us completely.

Christ was the living bread that came down from heaven –

those who would come unto Him and believe would have eternal blessings.

The emblems of the atonement that could free all men from sin

were freely given to those who would repent, partake and be forgiven.

Many would go away after hearing this instruction.

This was too much to bear for those without comprehension.

The wheat and tares would be sifted one more time -

seeds of truth would fall on parched soil and shrivel in the sun.

Only the elect would remain, their faith holding them resolutely in place.

They continually sought for reassurance in the Saviors loving grace.

"Will ye too go away?", was the question posed to the disciples from their leader.

"To whom shall we go?", was the response of Simon Peter.

The followers of Christ would find in Him the truth and words of eternal life.

Those with eyes to see and ears to hear will recognize the sound of His voice.
