The Road to Jericho

Updated: Dec 1, 2021

(Luke 10: 30-37)

On my way down the steep road to Jericho,

I was met by thieves who sought to injure my body and steal my soul.

Left by the roadside, barely alive;

wounded, bruised and battered, I fought desperately to survive.

At times when I came to myself, I tried not to be afraid,

as I sensed that others passed by me without offering aid.

Then I felt a shadow in the heat of the day,

a stranger stood above me and encouraging words he did say.

He poured wine in my wounds to clean and to heal,

He anointed my head with oil and a blessing he would seal.

Cool water to quench my thirst he did abundantly give,

I knew then that he would ensure that I lived.

By his clothes and his manner I knew him to be,

a kindly Samaritan who had come to deliver me.

He called me his neighbor, though I knew him not,

He treated me as one he loved and my comfort He sought.

He lifted me up and my burdens did bear,

we made haste for an inn and he briefly cared for me there.

My rescuer went on his way, with other matters to attend,

when he left I knew I had made a special friend.

The inn became my sanctuary where I could heal and improve,

the host was so willing to nourish and soothe.

The Samaritan soon returned to see my recovery complete,

I was strong enough then to know him and kneel at his feet.

As I look at the plan that our Father put into place,

I see the Savior as the good Samaritan with a loving smile on his face.

He gave me more than physical repair,

He saved me from sin and from spiritual despair.

He will do everything possible to provide for my need,

He knows me, loves me and wants me to succeed.

From the fall of Adam to my fall on the road,

The Savior has always been there to lighten my load.

The power of darkness, like thieves who destroy,

can never conquer when the grace of Christ we enjoy.
