The Divine Nature

If God is the ultimate omniscient celestial being,

what attributes does He have that we should aspire achieving?

If we are encouraged the divine character to imitate,

what are the heavenly traits that we should emulate?

Among the Godly qualities we find faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance,

charity, humility, meekness, mercy, patience and brotherly kindness.

The Sermon on the Mount gives us the right idea of how we should be

and the words of Jesus are preserved for us to live accordingly.

Christ taught us to live the standards that are equal to His stature -

a higher law that invites us to treat each other better.

Seeking the welfare of others is also what the divine nature is all about -

giving acts of selfless service without reservation or second thought.

Doing to others as we would have done to us is such an ideal way to live.

The world would be elevated immensely if this theme was observed.

If we regard each other truly as brothers and sisters,

the distance between our differences will dissolve like sugar in water.

Think about making a perceived enemy a friend

and loving them in a way that you never before imagined.

Surely, Christ set the perfect example for us with His many acts of goodness.

One of the reasons He came to Earth was to teach us Godly benevolence.

If we are to be complete and achieving our ultimate everlasting goal,

the instruction we receive from God is the guidance that will make us spiritually whole.

God loves us first and foremost and asks us to love others just as much.

Our love for Him is shown in the way we care for others and in

keeping His commandments.

How do we rise to the level that brings us closer to Deity?

Step by step, day by day, grace by grace now and throughout all eternity.

2 Peter 1:3-8 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Ezra Taft Benson, “Godly Characteristics of the Master”, October 1986

“When I ponder what kind of men and boys we should be as priesthood holders, I cannot help but think of the Savior’s questions to the Nephite twelve when He asked, “Therefore, what manner of men ought ye to be? Verily I say unto you, even as I am” (3 Ne. 27:27). To be like the Savior—what a challenge for any person! He is a member of the Godhead. He is the Savior and Redeemer. He was perfect in every aspect of His life. There was no flaw nor failing in Him.

The Apostle Peter spoke of the process by which a person can be made a partaker “of the divine nature” (2 Pet. 1:4). This is important, for if we truly become partakers of the divine nature, we shall become like Him. … The virtues outlined by Peter are part of the divine nature, or the Savior’s character. These are the virtues we are to emulate if we would be more like Him”.

Matthew 5:1-9 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

Moroni 7:46-48 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, if ye have not charity, ye are nothing, for charity never faileth. Wherefore, cleave unto charity, which is the greatest of all, for all things must fail—But charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him. Wherefore, my beloved brethren, pray unto the Father with all the energy of heart, that ye may be filled with this love, which he hath bestowed upon all who are true followers of his Son, Jesus Christ; that ye may become the sons of God; that when he shall appear we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is; that we may have this hope; that we may be purified even as he is pure. Amen.

Alma 7:23-24 And now I would that ye should be humble, and be submissive and gentle; easy to be entreated; full of patience and long-suffering; being temperate in all things; being diligent in keeping the commandments of God at all times; asking for whatsoever things ye stand in need, both spiritual and temporal; always returning thanks unto God for whatsoever things ye do receive. And see that ye have faith, hope, and charity, and then ye will always abound in good works.

John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

Matthew 7: 12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
