Thanksgiving

As the family sat down around the well-adorned table,

they were grateful that so many of them could assemble.

A few had traveled quite a distance

to be together for this seasonal family occurrence.

Each had come bearing a measure of burdens and strife.

No one was exempt from the challenges of this mortal life.

This was a time to take respite from troubles and cares -

to give thanks for so many blessings they were fortunate to share.

This Thanksgiving feast was a culmination of many efforts -

it was a reminder of the bounties that God gives in great abundance.

It was more than the variety of delicious foods that were preferential -

it was being together that really made this occasion special.

Not all were able to attend; some were there only in spirit -

loved ones who had departed many years ago from the present.

Much time had passed since this family started with just two.

The years had matured each one and had changed more than a few.

All had been blessed, touched often by God’s good grace.

Each one had occasion to rejoice in His handiwork and feel His warm embrace.

Some had faith that was maintained carefully from day to day over many years.

Others were still searching for purpose and understanding of why they were here.

They had all gone their different ways in their upward climb -

college, missions and marriage had separated them from time to time.

As they held hands around the table and looked at each other fondly,

there was a peace and comfort that enveloped the gathering completely.

Reflection and remembrance of so many good times together,

prompted gratitude and thanksgiving that each person would treasure.

As they parted company at the close of this cherished holiday,

they embraced with tears and wishes that good fortune would be with them on their way.
