Inspired by the song “He Looked Up” by Michael McLean
The angry men gathered around amid the noise and shouts-
among themselves they questioned:
“Which one is the prophet, the one we have heard so much about?”
The brothers were shackled, along with some dear companions -
falsely accused and chained, expecting confinement and persecution.
Hyrum saw the interest of the mob and turned to Joseph, who was younger.
“ I bet they are looking for you, my good brother”
Joseph placed a hand on the back of his sibling and said with a nod -
“ You are the one who looks more like a prophet of God”
“You are dignified and stately, as much as a prophet could be”.
“They would definitely choose you over me”.
Hyrum looked into his brothers face and saw nothing but serenity.
He thought about why Joseph was called for this important role and destiny.
The impression came to him then that if he had been in the sacred grove on that day,
that he would have bowed down and dared not lift his face to the sky.
But it was Joseph who was there – he was the one with the utmost determination,
to find answers to crucial questions though heavenly revelation.
It was Joseph who looked up and received the glorious vision.
It was he who was willing to do God’s will regardless of the difficulty or situation.
That young boy came out of the woods that day with a new perspective on religion -
he was taught from on high about the essence of salvation.
So, while these two men had so much in common and had gone through so much together,
it was Joseph who was there and looked to God for answers to his sincere prayers.
These two brothers were inseparable in life and not divided by death,
they stood by each other in trials so severe that would take away their breath.
The bonds that held them together could not be broken by any adversity.
Each man was called to serve according to God’s desire and their capacity.
When we are faced with questions or difficulties that try our very souls,
remember to look up and seek God who desires to help with all our worthy goals.
Because a young man looked up, I know I can do the same.
With deep gratitude I can follow his example and honor his name.
