Better at the End

Updated: Dec 1, 2021

Here is a man so flawed and stained;

he spent agonizing hours seeking forgiveness and change.

At the beginning, he was young and was easily swayed,

foolish lies, deception and injuring others were mistakes he frequently made.

He wanted to bridge the gap between desires and acts,

his heart knew what was right, but often his actions did not measure up.

He found that the grace of God and His tender mercies always brought relief,

not seventy times seventy, but infinite forgiveness beyond his belief.

We should measure success not in never falling,

but in rising each time we fall, determined to keep moving and heeding the call.

It is said that a person hasn’t really tried if they have not seen defeat,

learning from errors is the way we learn and grow and become great.

The best men and women have failed too many times to count,

always finding a reservoir of courage and strength to carry them beyond.

This man changed through the years, developed a solid core,

still flawed but better than what he was years before.

Life has a way of knocking off the edges as we roll along,

gaining greater wisdom and understanding as adversity refines.

It is said that by small and simple means great things come to pass,

for this man, gaining grace by grace would save him at the very last.

Can he keep on trying, endure to the end ?

what awaits this man, around the next bend ?

Can he survive the next fall, pick himself up and move ahead?

Can he go the distance even when the going is so hard?

He finds inspiration and relief when he looks around,

he sees so many others that obtained the higher ground.

He takes courage when he remembers the concept of grace,

that God can make men equal to the obstacles in this human race.

He knows he is never, ever alone in his quest,

with God all things are possible, even to change this man into one of the very best.

His belief is sure: “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me”,

this hope and faith encourage him onward to be the best he could be.

The man found as he looked back on his life on earth,

the hand of God has been there in all things from his birth.

The marker keeps moving, the end is really nowhere in sight,

time on earth is just a moment in the expanse of eternal life.

At the end, the man was better than at the start,

his life had changed, little by little, and so had his heart.
